El músico, una gran influencia del grunge que inspiró, entre otros, a Kurt Cobain, del que era amigo, falleció en su casa de Killarney, Irlanda anunció el pasado martes su familia. Aunque su pasado está íntimamente relacionado con el grunge, al frente de los Screaming Trees, curiosamente Lanegan, y más en los últimos años, era un enamorado de la música electrónica, sobre todo de Kraftwerk, New Order y Depeche Mode. De hecho fue Peter Hook fue una de las primeras personas en expresar el pésame a través de las redes. Y en cuanto a Depeche Mode, a Dave Gahan le une su amistad a través de la participación en el proyecto Soulsavers y llegaron a interpetar la versión de Cat People (Putting Out Fire) de Bowie para un single de benéfico. Y, además de Bowie, el gran maestro de Lanegan era sin duda Iggy Pop, probablemente porque consiguió sobrepasar el mito que había creado con su banda con su propia carrera en solitario y de quien dijo que “podría llenar toda mi lista (de favoritos) con discos de Iggy. Lust For Life, Soldier, Party y, sobre todo, los clásicos criminalmente subestimados Zombie Birdhouse y New Values…”. Su admirado mentor no se olvidó de él y también le dedicó un recuerdo en las redes.
Cuando era adolescente, Lanegan cogía un autobús 120 millas desde su pequeña ciudad natal rural del este de Washington, Ellensburg, hasta Seattle y caminaba por la ciudad a diferentes tiendas de discos – a todos nos suena esto mucho- en busca de música nueva que era imposible encontrar. Una de ellas era Fire of Love (1981), el debut de la banda de punk británica The Gun Club. Por eso no es nada de extrañar que, muchos años más tarde, Lanegan participase en la trilogía que se grabó en ese particular homenaje a su vocalista, su admirado Jeffrey Lee Pierce: We Are Only Riders (2010), The Journey is Long (2012) y Axels & Sockets (2014) que recuperaba- con un resultado más que notable para un proyecto bastante arriesgado- letras o incluso demos que Pierce había escrito o grabado y nunca vieron la luz.
En aquel proyecto- en el que también estaban Debbie Harry o The Raveonettes– Lanegan coincidió con Nick Cave, que recientemente le dedicó un espacio su sitio Red Hand Files rememorando sus recuerdos del artista en el escenario:“Pero mira a Mark, mira cómo camina hacia el escenario, se planta en el soporte del micrófono, un puño tatuado en la mitad del soporte, el otro descansando sobre el micrófono, inmóvil, enorme, masculino. Cuando llega el momento de cantar, simplemente abre la boca y suelta un blues, un blues vivido profunda y absolutamente ganado, y esa voz te atraviesa, su fuerza pura en el escenario es absolutamente aleccionadora”. En Facebook, el antiguo compañero de banda en Screaming Trees, Barrett Martin, también escribió: “Los críticos a menudo afirmaban que su voz provenía del whisky, pero Mark cantaba así cuando era joven y sobrio, una voz antigua plantada dentro del cuerpo de un hombre joven. Por cierto, nunca vimos a Mark tocar una gota de whisky: el gin tonic era su bebida preferida y muchos cigarrillos. Los críticos nunca aciertan (…) Mark tenía la capacidad de contar la más horrible de las historias, pero te hacía reír a carcajadas mientras contaba la historia hasta el final. Tenía ese ingenio agudo que tienen todos los grandes escritores porque también tenía una visión aguda de los corazones de las personas, y nos mostró el espectro completo de la humanidad”.
