La celebración del 50º aniversario de Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era
Patti Smith, Bob Mould, Steve Wynn, Peter Buck o Richard LLoyd, entre otros músicos, celebraron junto a Lenny Kaye el 50º aniversario del lanzamiento del influyente álbum recopilatorio de garage rock realizado en 1972 por Jac Holzman, fundador de Elektra Records, junto al propio Kaye.
Elektra Records se había acercado al crítico de rock Lenny Kaye (todavía no era guitarrista de Patti Smith Group) con la idea de compilar un álbum de grandes melodías de rock que no llegaron a las listas, pero lo que se le ocurrió a Kaye fue almacenar un álbum doble con canciones de bandas de garage estadounidenses. Fue lanzado como doble álbum por Elektra en 1972 con notas de Kaye que contenían uno de los primeros usos del término “punk rock”.Sire Records lo reeditó con un nuevo diseño de portada en 1976. Todas esas bandas sería luego fueron consideradas como una influencia importante para el movimiento punk: The Electric Prunes, The Chocolates Watchband, The Sonics o The 13th Floor Elevators. Contrariamente a lo que se puede pensar, la mayor parte de esas canciones fueron éxito en EEUU, algunas top 20, como Farmer John (1964, #19) de The Premiers, Psychotic Reaction de Count Five (1966, #5), Liar, Liar (1965, #12) de The Castaways, Lies (1965, #20) de The Knickerbockers o I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night) (1966, #11) de The Electric Prunes.
A lo largo de los últimos meses ha habido una serie de eventos de celebración del álbum- como el celebrado el 19 de mayo que incluyó invitados como James Lowe de los Electric Prunes o Johnny Echols de Love– que han concluído con dos espectáculos estelares en el City Winery de Nueva York los pasados días 28 y 29 de julio y que también recaudaron dinero para los gastos médicos del cantante y compositor Jesse Malin que sufre parálisis en las piernas.
Los sets de ambas noches fueron más o menos los mismos, que siguió prácticamente el mismo orden del álbum, alternándose con otras versiones y aunque no completo, con Patti Smith haciendo versiones de The Electric Prunes y The Leaves, Bob Mould de The Castaways y The Litter, Steve Wynn y Peter Buck haciendo versiones de The Moving Sidewalks y The Spades, Vicki Peterson de The Bangles versionando a The Beau Brummels y The Knickerbockers, Juliana Hatfield a The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Marshall Crenshaw a Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs o Richard Lloyd cubriendo Count Five, entre otros.
