Cómo empezó su carrera: Su padre, Rev. C.L. Franklin, fue el carismático pastor de New Bethel Baptist Church, que convirtió en una institución grande y próspera. Sus servicios fueron transmitidos localmente y en otros lugares de todo el país, y 60 de sus sermones (incluido el legendario The Eagle Stirreth Her Nest) fueron lanzados en forma de álbum. Desde muy temprana edad, Aretha cantó a las órdenes de su padre durante los servicios en New Bethel. Sin embargo, no debemos de olvidar que, sobre todo a principios de los 70s, incluyó en su repertorio memorables composiciones propias como Spirit in the dark (Spirit in the dark, 1970), Rock Steady (Young, gifted and black, 1972) o Sister from Texas (Hey now hey, 1974),
