Cuándo empezó su carrera: En abril de 1967 se formó la banda con Simon Nicol, Ashley “Tyger” Hutchings, Richard Thompson y Shaun Frater, a los que se unió poco más tarde July Dyble. El productor Joe Boyd al conocerles les aseguró contrato en Polydor. Para su debut homónimo en 1968 se incorporó al grupo Ian Matthews. A partir de su segundo álbum July Dyble sería sustituida por la vocalista Sandy Denny. Actualmente el único miembro original que permanece en Fairport Convention es Simon Nicol.

– Su único hit en las listas fue una versión en francés de un tema de Dylan (If you gotta go, go now), titulado Si tu dois partir. Llegó al puesto veintiuno en las listas inglesas.
– La cara b de su single Now be thankful (1970) ostenta el récord Guiness al título más largo de una canción: Sir B. McKenzie’s daughter’s lament for the 77th mounted lancer’s retreat from the straits of Loch Knombe, in the year of Our Lord 1727, on the occasion of the announcement of her marriage to the Laird of Kinleakie.
