Especial Recomendación: Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011)

Cuándo empezó su carrera: En la universidad, con su amigo Brian Jackson formó un grupo llamado Black & Blues. Pero fue en 1970 cuando publicó un revulsivo trabajo, Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, un alegato contra el consumismo masivo, la televisión y la hipocresía de algunos movimientos en defensa del derecho de la gente de color. Ya había publicado su primera novela, The Vulture, a los 19 años.

Un par de álbumes: Además del citado álbum, Pieces of a Man de 1971 y Winter in America, de 1974.

Raíces e influencias: Richie Havens, John Coltrane, Otis Redding, Billie Holiday, Langston Hughes, Malcolm X, Huey Newton, Nina Simone.

Artistas a los que ha influenciado: Eminem, Kanye West, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Arrested Development, Digable Planets, KRS-1, Me’Shell Ndgeocello, Aesop Rock, Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Jungle Brothers, Tupac, Paul Weller, y en general toda la nueva generación del hip hop y neo soul.

Compositor habitual: Scott-Heron compuso la mayor parte de su obra junto a su amigo y compañero de universidad Brian Jackson, hasta finales de la década de los setenta.A él debe el sonido característico – y de gran influencia en el futuro- de la flauta de muchas de sus canciones, como The Bottle.

Estilo: soul, jazz, spoken word soul, fue llamado el “Bob Dylan” del soul, por sus letras ácidas, y “El padrino del rap”, por ser una de las mayores influencias de las formaciones de este estilo.
