Especial Recomendación 50 Aniversario: The Kinks

kinks2Cómo empezaron su carrera: se formaron en el año 1963 en Londres. Los hermanos Ray (guitarrista) y Dave Davies (vocalista) junto el bajista Pete Quaife. Durante sus primeras actuaciones, con el nombre de The Ravens. Al mismo tiempo graban una maqueta que llega a manos de la compañía discográfica Pye Records. En 1964 firmaron con Larry Page un contrato para grabar tres sencillos. La canción con la que debutaron – en febrero del mismo año- fue una versión escogida por el propio Page, de Little Richard, Long Tall Rally, que pasó inadvertida. El grupo decide cambiar a instancias de su mentor su nombre por uno más llamativo como The Kinks (Los Raros). No fue hasta la publicación de su tercer sencillo, el clásico You Really Got Me, con el que rompieron todos los moldes y con el que lograron la primera posición en las listas de éxitos del Reino Unido y el alcanzaron el top 10 norteamericano.

Un par de álbumes: The Kinks es tradicionalmente- y lamentablemente- conocida como una “banda de singles”,  cuando en su larga trayectoria tienen discos tan excelentes como muchos de sus compañeros de generación: Face to face (1966), Something else (1967) o Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneyground (1970). Es cierto que, al no haber triunfado en EEUU,  como sí lo hicieron sus compañeros de generación, la formación ha quedado como una “banda británica” más, cuando su influencia ha sido enorme, incluso en la música norteamericana, en años posteriores.

Artistas a los que han influído: The Clash, The Who, The Jam, Pretenders, Iggy Pop, Madness, The Smiths, Big Star, Oasis, Blur, XTC, The Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, Spoon, Neko Case, Ramones, Metallica, The Libertines, Aerosmith y muchos más.

Estilo: Pop, rock. De ellos se han dicho que fueron “los primeros punks” puesto que hoy en día se reconoce que canciones como You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night o I Need You tuvieron gran influencia en el desarrollo del punk, del heavy metal e incluso del grunge (Wicked Annabella). Mantuvieron una gran coherencia durante su carrera, fueron pioneros- antes que los Beatles ya introdujeron en sus canciones sonidos similares al sitar como en la guitarra de Dave Davies para See my friends, en 1965- y apostaron por la experimentación (Preservation Act 1 y 2), incluso a costa de su popularidad. Incluso en los años ochenta mantuvieron su sonido fiel a su estilo con discos notables.
