Cómo comenzó su carrera: Mark E.Smith creó The Fall en Manchester en 1976, tras un concierto de los Sex Pistols al que fue con sus amigos Martin Bramah, Una Baines y Tony Friel. Smith quería nombrar al grupo The Outsiders, pero Friel se le ocurrió el nombre “the Fall” después de una novela de 1956 de Albert Camus. El grupo tocó su primer concierto el 23 de mayo de 1977 en el sótano de North West Arts.Pronto cayeron en gracia del manager de del gerente de Buzzcocks, Richard Boon, quien financió su primera sesión de grabación. y en noviembre de 1977 grabaron material para su EP debut, Bingo-Master’s Break-Out!.

Composición y sonido: Post Punk. A lo largo de su carrera, The Fall – que prácticamente publicaron disco por año desde su creación- atravesó una serie de cambios en su estilo, con un punto de inflexión desde 1984 cuando la esposa estadounidense de Smith, Brix, se unió a la banda como guitarrista, aportando canciones más estructuradas y melódicas como los sencillos No Bulbs y Cruiser’s Creek. A pesar de su sonido más oscuro, tras la marcha de Brix, Extricate, su álbum de 1990, cosechó excelentes críticas.
